The \u00bbAG Spielumwelt\u00ab [PlayEnvironment project group] existed at the \nnGbK (formerly NGBK) from 1969 to 1972. Its founding ideal was to \ndevelop artistic practices with and for children, so as to raise \ncritical awareness of capitalism\u2019s effects. Instead of the illusions the\n toy industry promised, children were to build a realistic play \nenvironment \u2013 a space where they would acquire self-confidence enough to\n handle the challenges of everyday life. So a loft space was rented at \nKulmerstr. 20a in Berlin-Sch\u00f6neberg and, over the following months, \nartists and children from the neighbourhood met in this so-called \n\u00bbSpielklub\u00ab [PlayClub], to build a model city. There was a bank, a \ntheatre, a hotel, a wholesaler\u2019s, a kindergarten, a waffle stand, a \nphotography studio, Maier\u2019s wallpaper shop and a boxing ring. Money was \nprinted \u2013 the \u203aKulmer Mark\u2039 \u2013 and from this moment on, the kids called \ntheir Spielklub \u203aDas Fest\u2039 [The Party].<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The revival of the \u00bbSpielklub Kulmer Strasse\u00ab takes the form of a \n2-month experimental set-up, the \u00bbSpielclub Oranienstrasse 25\u00ab, for \nwhich the nGbK exhibition space will be transformed into a symbolic \nmodel of the Oranienstrasse. Local school classes will spend PlayDays \nthere, devising ways to deal with current urban development issues in \nBerlin and, more specifically, in the Oranienstrasse, for example, \nhousing policy, rent levels and participation in movements for social \nchange.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A parallel exhibition will examine the historic \u00bbSpielklub Kulmer \nStrasse\u00ab and the broader discursive framework of the 1970s in which it \narticulated its aims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The \u00bbSpielclub\u00ab is open to school classes on weekdays, and to the \ngeneral public (children, parents, professionals and any other \ninterested persons) from 15:00, and on weekends. Everyone is welcome to \ndrop by and discover the broad-ranging scope of the Spielclubs\u2019 \neducation and outreach programs, past and present. The grand finale will\n be a talk between the Spielclub artists of then and now \u2013 and a \nchildren\u2019s party.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
